1)                        I feel that the main idea of the poem AT SEVENTEEN by Janis Ian is responsibilities. In the poem stanza 4, and 5. “So remember those who win the game, So remember those who win the game, In debentures of quality and dubious integrity, Their small-town eyes will gape at you, In dull surprise when payment due, Exceeds accounts received at seventeen. To those of us who knew the pain, Of valentines that never came, And those whose names were never called, When choosing sides for basketball, It was long ago and far away, The world was younger than today,
When dreams were all they gave for free, To ugly duckling girls like me“. When your seventeen you have to have responsibilities for most things. I like that Janis Ian included the bank account and that you half to take care of yourself. When you have a bank account you take the responsibilities to not spend your money but to save it. Also when you’re living on your own you need to take care of yourself and to not relay on others to help you.

   

2)          The technique that I felt in the poem AT SEVENTEEN by Janis Ian, most effectively was Rhyme Scheme. In the poem stanza 3 “ A brown eyed girl in hand me downs, whose name I never could pronounce, Said- pity please the ones who serve, they only get what they deserve, The rich relationed hometown queen, Marries into what she needs, With a guarantee of company, and haven for the elderly.” In this stanza the Rhyme Scheme is A, A, B, B, C, D, E, and E. She starts off with rhyming downs, and pronounce, serve with deserve. Then she puts queen but doesn’t rhyme it with another word this time instead she puts needs. This is a good example of rhyme scheme because you can change it up once in a while or every time instead for rhyming every time. Then at the end she rhymes company, and elderly. Janis Ian is really good at showing her rhyme scheme and how you can keep it the same but you can also change it up
